3 Resources to Help Keep Your Biz Legal

I wanted to share some resources to ensure that your business is/remains legally compliant.

First is FinCEN. I shared this new U.S. Federal Government requirement back in January.

The highlights:

The regulation by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) requires entities created or registered by state offices to disclose certain details to FinCEN, starting January 1, 2024.

  • Beneficial owners, those with substantial control or at least 25% ownership, must be reported.
  • Existing entities must report specific information by January 1, 2025, while new entities formed in 2024 need to report within 90 days of formation.

That information required includes the full legal name, date of birth, residential street address, and a unique identifying number from a passport, driver’s license, or other governmental documentation, and an image of that document.

I completed it for TMW earlier this week. It took about 10 minutes and I could answer everything off the top of my head. Be sure to have an image of your identification doc to upload.

Next up is ADA Website Accessibility.

There are a lot of rules and guidelines around this. You can check them out at https://www.ada.gov/resources/web-guidance/

There are two general approaches to website accessibility:

  1. Make your site accessible manually. Watching color contrasts, font sizes, etc. as shown in the above guidance or
  2. Use an accessibility overlay such as AccessiBe. AccessiBe is affordable, has a complimentary trial, will do a demo with you and is quick to install via a plug-in.

I’m going to bundle the third: Privacy Policy + GDPR + Cookie Consent + Terms and “all the things”

I was using a service for years that I recently discovered wasn’t 100% compliant themselves and so changed to one that’s compliant worldwide and was recommended by my web tech Bridget of Unbox Interactive (Bridget also revamped the backend of my website to ensure things run a lot smoother and the site meets accessibility guidelines — highly recommend her for all things WordPress).

The name is Termageddon and they automatically (LOVE that word!) update your site as the laws change. This is Bridget’s affiliate link which will give you 10% off the $119 investment and you can reach out to her directly if you’d like assistance.

I hope these resources are helpful!
