Procrastination – Overcome It or Watch Your Business Wither and Die

Posted In: ,

procrastinationYou’re busy.  I get it.

Your family demands attention.  I get it.

You’re overwhelmed.  I get that too.

You’re in *this* business to live your desired lifestyle and your desired lifestyle isn’t working nights and weekends while wondering where the revenue is.  I get it.

And there’s SO much to do that sometimes it’s easier to focus on other things.  I understand.

So let me ask you one simple question. . .

Do you want a business which supports your desired lifestyle?

If so, it’s time to stop procrastinating and start moving steadily forward.  The easiest way to do that?

Ask yourself “WHY” you want a business which supports your desired lifestyle.  Write it down in as much detail as you can.

Walk away, go do something which you enjoy, come back and read your “why” statement – does it excite you? Does it incite your passion?

If not, it’s not strong enough and you have to consider whether you’re in the right industry for the right reason or whether you need to spend some more time working on your “why”.

If so, great.  Now we have something we can work with.

Make It Real: My Request To You

You love what you do and you want to create a business which supports you.  Your “why” statement motivates and inspires you.  What next?

Pick one goal to focus on (yes, just one).  An example may be:

  • Consistently send out my newsletter for the next 6 months or
  • Create and fill my next group program such that there’s a waiting list to work with me or
  • Fill my membership program so that the profit from it covers my monthly overhead

Now:

  • Make a list of what will happen if you achieve your goal.  A long list.  Everything you can think of.
  • Make a list of what will happen if you don’t achieve your goal.  Make it count.

Are you feeling pulled forward toward your goal?  If so, great, continue below.  If not, go back and add more to your lists until you do feel pulled forward or decide to create a new goal.

Now take your goal and ask “What happens just before I achieve the goal?” and then “And what happens before that?” and “Before that?” and “The step before that?” until you arrive at what to focus on next, immediately.

Then do it.   And then the next thing, and the next thing until your goal is achieved.

Everything you work on should, in some way, relate back to your goal.  Otherwise ask yourself “Why am I focused on this now?”

It’s not always going to be easy, that’s why a strong “WHY” statement is so important.  To keep you focused and “in action” on those things which will deliver your dream.
