We’ve all been there — you sit down to work, but the sun is shining, birds are singing, and suddenly, your to-do list feels a lot less important. Or maybe business is moving slower than you’d like, and it’s tempting to just take the day off. Or maybe business is moving like a speed train and you feel the need to take the day off.
As a solopreneur/small business owner, staying motivated isn’t always easy, but it’s necessary. Here’s how to keep yourself on track without feeling like you’re missing out.
- Set a “Fun Time” Appointment
If you know you want to be outside, schedule it! Block off time in your calendar for a walk, a coffee break in the sunshine, or even an early quitting time on Friday. When you have planned breaks, it’s easier to stay focused during work hours. - Get Clear on Your Why
When business feels slow — or too fast — it’s easy to lose motivation. Remind yourself why you started. Whether it’s more freedom, financial security, or a bigger purpose, reconnect with your “why” to gain perspective on your next steps. - Break Work Into Sprints
Instead of dragging through a long work session, try the 25- or 50-minute focus method. Work on one task without distractions, then take a short break. Knowing a break is coming makes it easier to power through. I love these timers for setting sprint sessions.
- Create a Quick “Wins”
List Progress fuels motivation. Each day, write down three quick wins — an email sent, a social media post published, or a client follow-up. Seeing what you have accomplished makes it easier to keep going. - Change Your Scenery
If possible, take your work outside! Answer emails on the deck (I’m writing this on my back deck now), plan content at the park, or brainstorm while walking. A new setting can refresh your energy without derailing your work.
Business ebbs and flows, but consistency wins. Keep moving forward — even if it’s just one small step at a time.
One of my most favorite quotes from when I first started this business 20+ years ago:
“Ordinary things, done consistently, create extraordinary and consistent results” ~ me 🙂
What’s your next step?
